Short Description:
A DNA diagnostics lab, as part of its operations, encounters/detects many
types of DNA variations during its testing of patient samples. No single,
consistent, and easily mined repository is available for cataloging and
retrieving these variations.
There are several "databases" that
have been created over the years by members of the lab. They range from
MSAccess to MSExcel based means of storing variations, typically
containing only those variations for a specific disease or test performed.
Furthermore, the data elements stored for each variation are not
consistent.
A centralized and standardized (with regard to
data elements) repository is needed. A system is needed to store all past
and future variations we have encountered. As such it should allow manual
user entry as well as automated importation from text files, for instance.
This system should be a part of our entire process of providing results
for the patient testing we do for our DNA sequencing based assays, i.e.,
it should be incorporated into our testing process, not just a separate
component of it. In other words, the software should do more than just
store variations and retrieve them but instead do this in a manner that is
most efficient and easy for the users Required
